Wee See

2 Comments/ in Design / by Nick

Okay, you have to tell me what you think of these videos.

They come from a series of videos called Wee See, which is designed to introduce babies to the visual world. But I find them somehow really relaxing and inexplicably trance-inducing.

I really can’t tell you why this appeals to me, but I could watch these all day. I think my visual/spatial right brain gets it right away, but my left-brain, being logical and verbal (of which these videos are neither), can’t make sense of it and thus can’t develop words to tell you why I like it. But that’s just a theory.

What do you think? Do you like them? Would you play them for your baby? Would you watch them yourself?

Definitely trance-inducing, and they’d have the same effect on a baby, too. To “introduce a baby to the visual world” is to take them outside, to a museum, to the market, along with the parents wherever they might go. Locking a baby in a day care center and putting this on isn’t going to stimulate their visual capacity. They need to see real things – in life and in picture books.

Are these videos works of art? Certainly. Without a doubt. Are they effective training tools to expand your baby’s mind? I highly doubt it.
Maybe a slightly older child – 4-6yo maybe – could learn some interesting things about geometry and spatial relationships, but these are too abstract for effective development.

I went and checked out their website, and read what they’re about. The boldness is related to vision development. I don’t see them making any claims about expanding your baby’s mind… It looks as if they intend it to just be gentle sensory stimulation to put on while you’re cooking dinner and the baby is sitting in their bouncy seat or getting some tummy time. One thing is for certain, I highly doubt they’re suggesting you don’t expose your kids to anything else. From your picture, Ben, it seems you have a child. As a parent, I can certainly see the benefit of having something as soothing as this as some background artwork that my baby can engage with, or not.

I guess I’m defending these a bit because I think they’re really beautiful… and there’s so little out there in the way of baby products that are as carefully considered, from an aesthetic and auditory standpoint. And they don’t make any of the crazy claims like Baby Einstein.
